How Does Chord Detection Work?
Our chord detection algorithm uses a technique called chroma feature extraction combined with template matching. First, the audio signal is converted into a chromagram — a representation that maps the energy of each of the 12 pitch classes (C, C#, D, etc.) over time. This collapses all octaves into a single pitch-class space, so a C3 and a C5 are treated as the same note. The chromagram is then segmented into short time frames, and each frame is compared against a library of chord templates — predefined pitch-class profiles for Major, Minor, 7th, and other chord qualities. The template with the highest correlation score is selected as the detected chord for that frame. Finally, consecutive frames with the same chord are merged into longer segments, and a confidence score is calculated based on how closely the chroma vector matches the winning template.
Chord Types We Detect
Our detector identifies 9 chord qualities across all 12 root notes — 108 possible chord labels in total. Major chords (C, G, F) are the foundation of most popular music.
